My first inspirations for art came from my dad when I was very young. Being an engineer and a photography enthusiast, my father has always had a sharp eye and great taste in design. I enjoyed art classes all throughout my schooling and realized that I found creating pieces to be very relaxing and fun. I became more serious about art during my freshman year of high school. My two introduction to visual arts teachers really showed me that there is a whole other world out there besides Picasso paintings and Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. Being in advanced classes as well as AP Art History and the art intensive trip to Europe I attended with my school has really pushed me to view the world in a new light. There is no boundary of what art can be, and learning about so many amazing artists and works has inspired me in so many ways. |
Inspiration can come from anywhere. I usually pull ideas from different patterns I find in nature, my past experiences and pop icons. Last year, I was inspired by one of my favorite pop icons, Lady Gaga, and I ended up creating a lot of my work about her. I felt a need to create work about her and my love for her because she played such a key role in my life. This showed me that inspiration can come from any person, thing or place. I used to think that looking at other artists was a waste of my time because I did not want to be replicating their work or creating reductive pieces. I came to find that referring to other artists not only brings a different viewpoint about a subject, but also can inspire you to take your work to a new level. This year, for example, I was given an assignment dealing with eggs. I pulled inspiration from da Vinci and Matisse, two artists I would not have created any work about a year ago. |
